Business days calculator (working days between two dates)

🔒 Runs locallyWork & time

Count business days (working days) between two dates, skipping weekends and holidays.

The business days calculator counts the working days (Monday to Friday) between a start date and an end date, counting both end dates when they fall on a weekday. Paste an optional list of holiday dates (one per line, YYYY-MM-DD) and those days are skipped as well. It runs entirely in your browser, and if you enter the dates in reverse order it simply swaps them.

How we verify Business days calculator (working days between two dates)

How to confirm the business-day count matches your organization's actual calendar.

Counts Monday-Friday only, inclusive of both endpoints

The count includes every weekday from the start date through the end date, both inclusive — it doesn't count Saturdays or Sundays, and both the start and end dates themselves are counted if they fall on a weekday.

Holidays must be listed manually

The tool has no built-in knowledge of regional public holidays — if you need holidays excluded from the count, list their specific dates (one per line, YYYY-MM-DD) in the holidays field; without that, only weekends are excluded.

Holiday dates falling on a weekend have no effect

If a listed holiday date happens to fall on a Saturday or Sunday, it's already excluded from the count as a weekend, so listing it doesn't change the result — this is expected, not a sign the holiday list isn't working.

Before you rely on the result

  • You've listed any relevant holidays in the correct YYYY-MM-DD format, one per line, if they need to be excluded.
  • You understand only Monday-Friday count as business days by default — weekends are always excluded automatically.
  • You're aware this doesn't know regional public holidays automatically; you need to supply them yourself.
  • You've confirmed whether your organization's definition of "business days" matches this calculation (some contexts have their own quirks).

Who this is for

  • Project managers calculating a deadline based on a number of business days.
  • Anyone figuring out working days remaining in a pay period or sprint.
  • People estimating shipping or processing time quoted in business days.
  • Employees or managers calculating working days for a leave or absence request.

Real-world examples

Calculating a shipping estimate

A customer service rep needs to tell a customer when a "5 business days" shipment will arrive, calculating the actual delivery date by counting forward from the ship date, excluding weekends and listed company holidays.

Figuring out sprint working days

A project manager calculates how many working days fall within a two-week sprint, accounting for a public holiday that falls in the middle of it.

Calculating remaining leave days

An employee planning time off calculates the exact number of business days their requested leave period covers, to confirm it matches their available leave balance.

Limitations

  • Counts Monday-Friday as business days; it doesn't know regional public holidays unless you list them yourself.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate business days between two dates?

Pick the start and end date, optionally paste any holidays (one per line as YYYY-MM-DD), and click Calculate. The result is the number of Monday–Friday days in that range, counting both the start and end date if they are weekdays.

What is the difference between business days and working days?

In practice they mean the same thing here: Monday to Friday, minus any holidays you list. Some organizations use their own calendars (for example a six-day work week), which this tool does not model.

Can I add or subtract business days from a date to get a deadline?

Not directly — this tool counts the business days between two dates you choose. To find a deadline, try different end dates until the count matches the number of business days you need.

Does this automatically know public holidays for my country?

No — it only automatically excludes weekends (Saturday and Sunday); any regional or company-specific holidays need to be listed manually in the holidays field.

Are the start and end dates themselves included in the count?

Yes — the count is inclusive of both the start and end date, as long as they fall on a weekday.

What happens if I list a holiday that falls on a weekend?

Nothing changes — that date was already excluded as a weekend, so listing it as a holiday too has no additional effect on the count.

Can I list multiple holidays?

Yes — enter one holiday date per line in YYYY-MM-DD format in the holidays field; all listed dates within the range are excluded from the count.
