Draw one or more names from a list, fairly.

How we verify Random name picker

How to confirm the draw is fair and behaves the way you expect around repeats.

Remove-after-draw controls whether names repeat

With "Remove after draw" on, a drawn name is taken out of the pool so it can't be picked again in a later draw within the same session — turn it off if you want draws to be fully independent each time, allowing the same name to come up again.

Drawing more names than remain shows an error

If you ask to draw more names than are left in the pool, the tool shows an error rather than drawing fewer than requested or repeating names — check the "remaining" count if a draw unexpectedly fails.

Reset returns to the full original list

Clicking reset restores the pool to your complete original list, clearing any names that were removed by previous draws — use this to start a fresh round rather than re-pasting the list.

Before you rely on the result

  • Your pasted list has one name per line, with no accidental blank lines or duplicates you don't want.
  • You've decided whether "Remove after draw" matches how you want repeats handled.
  • The number of names you're drawing doesn't exceed what's remaining in the pool.
  • You've used Reset (not a page reload) if you want to start a completely fresh round.

Who this is for

  • Contest or giveaway organizers who need to fairly pick a winner from entrants.
  • Teachers selecting a presentation order or volunteer from a class list.
  • Team leads drawing task assignments or turn order from a roster.
  • Anyone who wants an unbiased way to choose from a list of names.

Real-world examples

Picking a giveaway winner

An organizer pastes in 150 contest entrant names and draws one winner, with "Remove after draw" on in case they need to draw a backup winner from the remaining pool.

Setting a presentation order

A teacher pastes a class roster and draws all names one at a time with removal on, establishing a fair, random order for student presentations.

Selecting a random subset for a task

A manager needs 3 volunteers from a team of 12 for a special project, drawing 3 names at once with removal on to guarantee no one is picked twice.

Limitations

  • Once the list is fully drawn, drawing again shows an error — it does not automatically refill.
  • Duplicate names are matched by exact text, so identical entries can't be told apart when removing.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I try to draw more names than are left?

The tool shows an error rather than drawing fewer than you asked for — check the "remaining" count shown on screen and adjust your draw count or reset the pool.

Can the same name be drawn twice?

Only if "Remove after draw" is turned off — with it on, each name can only be drawn once until you reset the pool.

How do I start over with the full list?

Click the Reset button — it restores the pool to your complete original list, undoing any removals from previous draws.

Does the tool detect duplicate names in my pasted list?

No — if your list has the same name twice, both entries are treated as separate, independently drawable items in the pool.
