Keyboard tester

🔒 Runs locallyWork & time

Test that every key on your keyboard registers correctly.

The keyboard tester shows an on-screen keyboard layout and highlights each key as you press it, letting you check that every key registers correctly — useful for testing a new, used, or possibly faulty keyboard.

Press any key — it lights up below and stays highlighted once pressed.

How we verify Keyboard tester

How to run a thorough test.

A key only highlights once it's actually detected

If a key doesn't light up no matter how many times you press it, that's a strong sign it isn't registering — try pressing it firmly and check the physical key isn't stuck or obstructed.

Press every key, not just the ones you use often

Keys you rarely use (function keys, less common punctuation) are the easiest ones to have a hidden problem with, since you might not notice during normal typing.

Layout differences can affect specific keys

This shows a standard US keyboard layout — a keyboard with a different physical layout may have keys that don't map cleanly onto the on-screen labels, particularly around punctuation and the keys near Enter.

Before you rely on the result

  • You've pressed every key shown, including function keys and less common ones.
  • Any key that didn't light up was tried multiple times to rule out a fluke.
  • You've checked for physically stuck or sluggish keys, not just missing highlights.
  • You're aware layout differences might affect a few keys if your keyboard isn't a standard US layout.

Who this is for

  • Anyone checking every key works on a new keyboard.
  • People diagnosing a keyboard with an unresponsive or sticky key.
  • Anyone testing a secondhand keyboard before purchasing.
  • People verifying a laptop keyboard after a spill or repair.

Real-world examples

New keyboard check

Someone tests every key on a newly purchased keyboard to confirm it works before the return window closes.

Diagnosing a suspected bad key

A person who noticed a key not responding during typing uses the tester to confirm exactly which key is affected.

Post-repair verification

Someone tests their laptop keyboard after a spill cleanup or repair to confirm every key responds normally again.

Limitations

  • Shows a standard US keyboard layout — physical key positions on other layouts may not line up exactly with the on-screen labels.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't a key light up when I press it?

Either the key isn't registering (a hardware issue) or it's a key not mapped cleanly on this standard US layout — try a few other keys nearby to see if it's an isolated issue.

Does this test key rollover (pressing multiple keys at once)?

It highlights every key detected, including multiple at once, but doesn't specifically report on rollover limits — for that, a dedicated rollover-testing tool would be more precise.

Why do a few keys look mismatched on a non-US keyboard?

The on-screen layout reflects a standard US keyboard — keyboards with different physical layouts (different punctuation placement, extra keys) may not map perfectly onto these labels.

Can I save or export which keys were tested?

No — this is a live, in-browser test only; there's no record kept after you reset or leave the page.
