Classroom group generator (split students into groups)
Split a class list into groups by number of groups or by group size.
The classroom group generator splits a pasted class list into groups, either by a fixed number of groups (sizes differ by at most one) or by a fixed group size (the last group may be smaller). Shuffling is optional, duplicate names are flagged before grouping, and the finished groups can be exported as a CSV file for sharing or printing.
How to use
- Paste one name per line (at least 2, no duplicates).
- "By group count" fills round-robin so group sizes differ by at most one.
- "By group size" fills sequentially at a fixed size — the last group gets whatever remains, which can be smaller.
- "Shuffle order" is optional; leave it off to group in the list's original order.
Common use scenarios
- Forming groups for a class activity or discussion.
- Splitting students into project teams of a specific size.
- Randomizing group assignments to mix up regular seating partners.
- Producing a printable or shareable group list for an activity.

How we verify Classroom group generator (split students into groups)
How to confirm the groups were split the way you intended.
By group count vs. by group size solve different problems
"By group count" fixes the number of groups and lets sizes differ by at most one member; "by group size" fixes how many go in each group and lets the final group be smaller if names don't divide evenly — pick based on which number (group count or group size) you actually care about matching.
Duplicate names are blocked, not silently merged
A list with two names matching case-insensitively is rejected with an error rather than being grouped as-is — fix the duplicate first, since it usually indicates a typo rather than two different students who happen to share a name.
This tool behaves differently from the Random group generator
Unlike the Random tools category's group generator, this one doesn't always shuffle and doesn't allow duplicate names — if you want a group split that always randomizes and tolerates duplicate entries, that's the other tool, not this one.
Before you rely on the result
- You've entered at least 2 names, with no accidental case-insensitive duplicates.
- You've chosen by-group-count or by-group-size based on which constraint actually matters for your activity.
- You understand the last group may be smaller when using by-group-size with an uneven list.
- You've decided whether to shuffle first or keep the list's original order.
Who this is for
- Teachers forming groups for a class activity or discussion.
- Teachers splitting students into project teams of a specific size.
- Anyone randomizing group assignments to mix up regular partners.
- Teachers producing a printable or shareable group list.
Real-world examples
Fixed number of discussion groups
A teacher wanting exactly 5 discussion groups regardless of class size uses by-group-count, letting the tool distribute students as evenly as possible.
Project teams of a set size
A teacher assigning 4-person project teams uses by-group-size, accepting that the last team might have fewer members if the class size isn't a multiple of 4.
Mixing up regular seating partners
A teacher who notices the same students always pair up turns on shuffle and regenerates groups to encourage different students to work together.
Limitations
- Duplicate names (case-insensitive) are blocked entirely rather than silently handled.
- This behaves differently from the Random group generator in the Random tools category — that one always shuffles and allows duplicates.
Frequently asked questions
How do I split a class into groups?
Paste one student name per line, choose "By group count" or "By group size", enter the number, leave Shuffle on for a random mix, and click Generate groups.
Can I save or print the groups?
Yes — click Export CSV to download a file listing each student with their group, which opens in Excel or Google Sheets.
Can I group students without shuffling?
Yes. Turn Shuffle off and students are grouped in the order of your list, which is handy for pre-sorted lists such as ability levels.
Should I use by-group-count or by-group-size?
Use by-group-count if you need a specific number of groups regardless of their size; use by-group-size if you need groups of a specific size regardless of how many groups that creates.
Why does the last group sometimes have fewer people?
That happens with by-group-size when the class size isn't an exact multiple of your chosen group size — the leftover students form a smaller final group.
Does this allow duplicate names like the random group generator does?
No — this tool blocks case-insensitive duplicate names entirely. If you need duplicate-tolerant, always-shuffled grouping, use the Random group generator in the Random tools category instead.
Is shuffling required?
No — it's optional. Leave it off to group names in their original list order, or turn it on to randomize before splitting into groups.
