How to use

  1. Upload one PDF file.
  2. Choose where the page number should appear.
  3. Set the starting number, font size and format (e.g. "{n} / {total}").
  4. Click "Add page numbers & download".

Common use scenarios

  • Adding "Page X of Y" numbering to a report before final distribution.
  • Numbering a scanned document that has no page numbers of its own.
  • Restarting numbering from a specific number for an appendix that continues a main document.
  • Adding page numbers in a corner rather than the usual bottom-center spot.

How we verify Add page numbers

How to confirm numbering appears in the right spot, starting at the right number.

Format placeholders: {n} and {total}

The format string supports two placeholders — {n} for the current page number and {total} for the total page count — so "{n} / {total}" produces "1 / 12", "2 / 12", and so on.

Starting number offsets every page

Setting a starting number other than 1 shifts every page's displayed number by that offset — useful when this document is an appendix continuing a main document's numbering.

Position and Latin-only format text

Choose from six corner/edge positions (e.g. bottom center, top right). Like the watermark tool, the format string itself uses a standard Latin font, so avoid CJK characters inside it.

Before you rely on the result

  • The format string placeholders ({n}, {total}) are spelled exactly as shown, including the curly braces.
  • The starting number matches what you actually want the first page to display.
  • The chosen position doesn't overlap existing content near that corner of the page.
  • You've checked at least the first, a middle, and the last page of the result for correct numbering.

Who this is for

  • Anyone preparing a report, thesis, or long document that needs numbered pages before printing or sharing.
  • Students numbering a scanned assignment that didn't come with page numbers.
  • Office workers adding continuation numbering to an appendix that follows a separately-numbered main document.
  • Anyone who wants numbering in a specific corner rather than the default bottom-center spot.

Real-world examples

Numbering a thesis before printing

A graduate student adds "{n} / {total}" numbering to the bottom center of a 120-page thesis PDF before submitting the printed copy to their department.

Continuing numbering into an appendix

An analyst's main report ends on page 40, so they set the starting number to 41 on a separate appendix PDF so the two documents read as one continuous sequence.

Numbering a scanned handout

A teacher scans a stack of worksheet pages with no numbers, then adds simple "{n}" numbering to the top right corner so students can reference pages by number in class.

Limitations

  • The format text also uses a standard Latin font — avoid CJK characters in the format string.

Frequently asked questions

What do {n} and {total} mean in the format field?

{n} is replaced with the current page's number and {total} with the document's total page count — so a format of "Page {n} of {total}" produces "Page 1 of 20", "Page 2 of 20", and so on.

Can I start numbering from something other than 1?

Yes — set the starting number field to whatever you want the first page to display; every subsequent page continues counting up from there.

Can I use Chinese, Japanese, or Korean text in the format string?

Not currently — the format text is rendered with a standard Latin PDF font, so stick to Latin letters, numbers, and basic punctuation like "/" or "-".

Does adding page numbers overwrite the watermark or other stamps I already added?

No — each tool run works on the file you currently have uploaded; if you want both a watermark and page numbers, run one tool, download the result, then re-upload it into the other tool.
